SSC stands for Staff Selection Commission (SSC). It is an organization under Government of India. SSC currently functions as an autonomous body that is mainly engaged in conducting competitive exams for recruitment to various posts in the SSC departments and organizations. It conducts various exams out of which one is named SSC CHSL.

SSC CHSL stands for Staff Selection Commission Combined Higher Secondary Level exam. Every year huge sum of students apply for this exam, online application forms are made available on the official websites of SSC. A minimal application fee is charged however, all women candidates and candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Physically Handicapped, and Ex- Servicemen eligible for reservation are exempted from paying the application fee. Along with the application form and fee a photograph and signature of the aspirant is also required.

Eligibility Critera as per 2019

  • Candidates must have passed 12th Standard or equivalent examination from a recognized Board or University.
  • For Data Entry Operator in the Office of Comptroller and Auditor General of India (C&AG): 12th Standard pass in Science stream with Mathematics as a subject from a recognized Board or equivalent.

Age limit

  • The minimum age of the candidates should be 18 years and maximum age
    27 years (as on 1st August 2019). Candidates of reserved categories have
    upper age relaxation as follows:
    SC / ST – 5 years
    OBC – 5 years
  • PwD – 10 years
    Ex-Serviceman – 3 years

Exam pattern and syllabus

SSC CHSL exam has three different phases that candidates need to clear to get selected for various posts in the Government Offices. SSC CHSL Tier I is Objective Multiple Choice Question paper, Tier II exam is Descriptive Paper in English/Hindi, while Tier III is the Computer Proficiency Test.

Tier 1

  • Objective type multiple choice question online exam.
  • There will be 4 sections; each section will have 25 questions and 50 marks
  • Time duration-75 minutes
  • Sections tested- 1) general intelligence, 2) general awareness, 3)
    quantitative aptitude, 4) English language.

Tier 2

  • Descriptive test, to test the written skills of candidates in English/Hindi. The paper involves writing of an Essay of 200-250 words and Letter/Application writing of about 150-200 words. The minimum marks that a candidate needs to qualify SSC CHSL Tier-II are 33 per cent.
    • The total time duration of the exam is of 60 minutes and total marks are 100 marks.
    • All the questions are based on the concepts of 10th standard.
    • The total time duration is 80 minutes for candidates who are visually handicapped or suffer from cerebral palsy.

Tier 3

  • Skill Test/Computer Proficiency Test.
  • Both online and offline.
  • In this test, a candidate should have data entry speed of 8,000 (eight thousand) Key Depressions per hour.

  • Duration of the Test is 15 minutes and English document having about
    2000-2200 strokes/key-depressions is given to type.
